Investigations of the kidneys and the urinary tract

SPECT/CT and cortical renal scintigraphy

Preparation
We recommend that you generally hydrate yourself well and drink about ½ litre of water 30 min before your examination.

The process
The examination occurs in 2 sessions

1st session
The intravenous injection of the radiopharmaceutical (duration: 15 min).
2nd session
Acquisition of the imaging (duration: 1 hr).

Between the two sessions (3 hr), you are free to leave the institute. We recommend that you generally hydrate yourself well and drink about ½ litre of water. During the examination under the camera please remain motionless.

Main clinical indications

  • Search for kidney scar
  • Search for acute pyelonephritis

Principle
The imaging is based on the extraction of a radiopharmaceutical by the cortex of the two kidneys, thus allowing the study of the functional cortex of each kidney, and to quantify the relative contribution of each kidney to the total renal function (relative function) . The main indication is the renal scar search 6 months after an infection of the kidney (acute pyelonephritis), visualised in the form of a diminished activity of the renal cortex on the scintigraphy.

Acute pyelonephritis (CT)

Corresponding kidney scar

None functional left kidney
