Investigations of the kidneys and the urinary tract

Isotopic nephrogram

Preparation
We recommend that you generally hydrate yourself well and drink about ½ litre of water 30 min before your examination.

The process
The examination occurs in 1 session.
Intravenous injection followed by imaging (duration: 1 hr).
During the examination under the camera please remain motionless.

Main clinical indications

  • Search for disease of the junction

Principle
Dynamic imaging is based on the extraction then the excretion of a radiopharmaceutical by the kidney, thus enabling its transit to be studied and to quantify the relative contribution of each kidney to the total renal function (relative function). The main indication is the search for a narrowing (stenosis) of the urinary tract between the renal pelvis and the ureter (disease of the pyelo-ureteral junction) visualized on the scintigraphy in the form of an abnormally slow elimination of the activity by a dilated collector system, despite the injection of a diuretic drug.

Left junction disease: accumulation of the radio-labeled urine in the left kidney collector system.
