Investigations of the brain

Cerebral SPECT/CT I123-Ioflupane (DaTSCAN™)

You will have to interrupt, on the advice of your doctor, the taking of certain drugs against drowsiness or attention deficit (psychostimulants) or against depression in the days preceding your examination. Iodine drops or tablets will be administered to you orally before the examination to protect your thyroid.

The process
The examination takes place in 2 sessions

1st session
Intravenous injection of the radiopharmaceutical (duration: 15 min).
2nd session
Acquisition of the imaging (duration: 1 hr).

Between the two sessions (4 hr), you are free to leave the institute. We recommend that you hydrate yourself well in a general way and drink about ½ litre of water. Please remain motionless during the examination under the camera.

Main clinical indications

  • Looking for Parkinson’s disease or Parkinson's syndrome

The imaging is based on the binding of a radiopharmaceutical to the dopamine transporters of the nigrostriatal neurons. In the case of degeneration of the dopaminergic endings in Parkinson's disease or Parkinson's syndrome, the number of dopamine transporters is reduced and visualized in the form of a hypoactivity of the central grey nuclei on the scintigraphy. The purpose is to differentiate the Parkinson syndromes of the essential tremor.
