Investigations of the brain

Cerebral perfusion SPECT/CT

Preparation
Avoid stimulants (caffeine, energy drinks, alcohol, and tobacco).

The process
The examination takes place in 1 session.
Intravenous injection, waiting for 30 min then imaging (duration: 1 hr).
You must remain motionless during the examination under the camera.

Main clinical indications

  • Looking for degenerative dementia

Principle
The imaging is based on the uptake of a radiopharmaceutical by the neuronal cells of the grey matter. The brain has the ability to adapt in a very precise way the blood flow to its regional metabolism. The study of the blood flow is therefore a direct measure of the regional metabolism of the brain and a useful complement to the morphological imaging in the clarification of different degenerative dementias such as Alzheimer's disease whose functionally impaired characteristic regions are visualized in the form of a hypoactivity on the scintigraphy.
